Nelson Mandela Institute’s work in Bizana
Our trip to Dudley last week was a great success but unfortunately I couldn’t provide regular updates as I was busy making arrangements for Ilima Lokufunda at Khumbuza Junior Secondary School and Dlangezwa Senior Primary School.
Join the 1GOAL March for Quality Education for All
Join the MARCH FOR QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION FOR ALL on June 10 in Johannesburg.
One of the most exciting national developments in education over the World Cup period has been the coalescence of civil society organisations behind the Public Participation in Education Network (PPEN) and 1GOAL’s campaign, calling for quality education for all South African children.
South Africa Civil Society Unites for Public Education: 1Goal-PPEN
Civil society in South African is uniting around the right to quality basic education. A growing coalition of teacher unions, workers, student organisations, parents and NGO’s have come together under the banner of 1Goal-PPEN. They call on all South Africans and visitors to join in a peaceful march for quality education. While the march has not yet received permission, the Coalition are moving forward in their plans to express their support for public education, working through all challenges to ensure that the March is celebrated across the nation.
Discovering the Nelson Mandela Institute
When I have thought about the education crisis in rural South Africa – shoddy classrooms, uncommitted teachers, and an ineffective system – I struggled to imagine a workable solution. Everybody seems to have their own opinions about what should be changed but what alternatives do we really know about as average citizens? Being the methodical, systematic person I am, I tend to reserve comment, or share my opinions modestly, while others blurt out theirs as if they were truth. But, last week, after journeying with two Nelson Mandela Institute staff members through the dusty villages of Mqanduli and Bizana in the Eastern Cape, I am ready to speak with some authority and oodles of excitement about the possibilities of world class rural education in South Africa.
Poetry journal to launch in the Eastern Cape
Primary school learners from the Eastern Cape were given the amazing opportunity to document their thoughts in the Phemba Mfundi poetry journal due to be launched in Qunu, Nelson Mandela’s homestead, this May.
