Phemba Mfundi Camp August 2010

On the 13th of August 2010 the Nelson Mandela Institute team went down to the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu to host the Phemba Mfundi Camp. One aim of this learner leadership programme is to foster organic self-organisation among learners. Another is to demonstrate a productive pedagogy (the art or science of teaching) and to provide a reflective experience to re-inspire teachers.

A walk in someone else’s shoes

Trailing train tracks of thought I find myself on a passenger seat staring through a window, humbled by what I see. I stare as we pass through the dusty roads of rural Mqanduli on our way to some of the schools the Nelson Mandela Institute works with. The purpose of this visit is to join hands with members of the community to repair windows, paint walls and clean the school yard in preparation for the school’s re-opening.
