On Freedom Day, 27th April 2009, the NMI produced the first edition of Phemba Mfundi, a journal of learner writing.  This year, the NMI plans to make the booklet much more exciting; it will feature poems, autobiographies and short stories. This year, on May 8, we will launch the second edition of the journal at the Qunu Youth Musuem.

The Phemba Mfundi team is visiting 21 schools in Mqanduli near Mthatha, collecting learners’ writings and helping them put the finishing touches on their contributions for this year’s edition.

Everyone at the Institute is excited and working hard; typing, editing and laying out the Phemba Mfundi journal before the big launch.

Learners from all the schools have shown great interest and are motivated. This will make the booklet even bigger than last year. In the second school term, we will launch a Phemba Mfundi newsletter, so friends and colleagues should look out for it! It’s going to be great; informative and full of learner writing. Most of the poems we receive are creative, interesting and original. It is an achievement for us to see even a small difference in rural learners, be it in their confidence, embracing ubuntu, their culture or their language.

Don’t miss your copy of Phemba Mfundi – this year, it’s going to be inspiring!
