Join Us!
The Nelson Mandela Institute (NMI) is one of four organisations established by Mr. Mandela to take forward his work into the future. Come and join us in celebrating Mr. Mandela’s birthday, and taking forward his work in the area of education and rural development into the future!
Over the next 3 months we will be having the following events to celebrate the life of uTata. Come and join in!
CELEBRATION 1: Celebrating with the Eastern Cape:
On the 18th of July, we celebrated with the community of Mqanduli and refurbished Phangindlela JSS. The ilima was a success and we launched the first of what we hope becomes a standard classroom in any school in South africa. A humanizing space which encourages young people to think and interact with knowledge and information.
Pictures of ilima are available for viewing under current projects, ilima.
Halala Madiba halala!
CELEBRATION 2: Celebrating with the University of Fort Hare:
On the 29th and 30th of August, we will celebrate the birthday of Mr. Mandela with the community of the University of Fort Hare. All people inspired by the work of Mr. Mandela and the past and future of the University of Fort Hare, are invited to join the University community in a Jamboree: Reimagining the University. On the first day of the Jamboree, special panelists from across the country will be invited to incoko (discuss and debate) with students and academics the future of the University as a Space for African Liberation. On Saturday, the 30th, the students of Fort Hare will host a jamboree involving debates, poetry sessions, discussion circles and other creative engagements around the core questions facing society – from liberation, to gender, to collective futures, to new understandings of race, culture, language and identity.
Speakers at the great debate include Enver Motala and Katherine Odora Hoppers.
The public is warmly welcome!
CELEBRATION 3: Celebrating with the Learners of the Eastern Cape:
On the 27th of September, we will be celebrating the birthday of uTata Mandela with young learner leaders in the Eastern Cape, who will be launching a book of poetry in Qunu. Learners are organising a conference where they will share their ideas around the concepts of ubuntu and learning with their peers and other conference participants (which could be you!). At this conference, they will launch a book of poetry as a gift to Mr. Mandela.
