Job Title:: Sustainability Manager
Basis: 50% time
Salary: Competitive salary, commensurate with experience

Location: Johannesburg or East London
In Brief: The Nelson Mandela Institute was founded by Mr. Mandela to take forward his work in rural education and development. The central work of the NMI is to work with stakeholders in rural education to create sustainable models for education and development serving the rural poor. The NMI is an optimistic and high energy organization committed to quality education and dignified lives for all. This is a senior and strategic post responsible for developing the long term sustainable funding base for the organisation.
Purpose: Strategic development and implementation of long term sustainable fund raising plan for the Institute, including donor research and building effective donor partnerships.
Seeking: The NMI is seeking an experienced mid career professional eager to make a substantive contribution to educational change in South Africa through advocacy and fundraising. We seek an experienced professional from the field of fundraising, strategic development, and communications, or other related fields that satisfies the requirements laid out in this job specification. Experience in education is an advantage.
Key Responsibilities:
• Strategic development of long term and sustainable fund raising strategy for the Institute;
• Building sustainable and effective donor partnerships (locally and internationally);
• Engage private sector leaders in strategic discussions about strengthening the private sector role in rural education;
• Working with the executive and Board of the NMI, with the support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, to consolidate a forum working to support Mr. Mandela’s vision in rural education;
• Communication and liaison with funders who have worked with Mr. Mandela in education, to strengthen working partnerships;
• Writing fund raising proposals and other developmental materials;
• Manage current fundraising communication requirements of the organisation;
• Manage the Sustainability and Investment Committee, a high profile committee dedicated to quality education and development, and the sustainability of the organisation.
• Contribute to and support the overall communication and advocacy strategies of the organisation.
Requirements:
• At least 8 years professional experience in communications, marketing, fund raising or senior management;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Experience in managing effective and respectful communication across a broad range of stakeholders;
• Proven experience in fundraising, advocacy or communication.
• Experience with the media is an advantage.
• Strong understanding of the social development challenges of South Africa; experience in education and rural development would be an advantage.
• Willingness to travel and work outside normal working hours.
• Valid driver’s license and own transport.
